I worked with designer Dahye Eun and my assistant Mayia Straus to create the familiar look of the deck of the Titanic. I lead a group of practicum students of varying levels to paint all the scenic elements, and even some props in the show.
Based on the research provided and conversations I had with Dahye, she decided to create a scuffled galvanized steel look for the stairs and platforms, to demonstrate how many people would have been walking around on those surfaces. I executed this look by doing a wet blend of a dark and light cray with a sponge roller to give it texture, then going over that texture with a dark colored glaze.
To finish off the floor, we added an amber-toned sealant on top. This gave it the shine Dahye was looking for in her design, as well as protected the floor a little more from scuffing.
In the Spring of 2025, I was the Scenic Charge for the production of Titanic the Musical at Ithaca College in the Clark Theatre, the mainstage black box theater. This project started in February 2025 and I worked on it until the end of the show run on April 29th, 2025
Although this set itself consisted of mostly navy blue, we were able to create more textural interest for the stairs, platforms and floor.
The floor was out biggest challenge of this set. After priming and basing the floor in a pale yellow, we went in with a light tone, mid tone, and dark tone glaze. We pulled the wood colors across the stage in one go, opting to pull the continuous lines of the planks after the wood graining glaze was put down.
